Fitness Training Course: Strategies Like Seal

There is no doubt that Navy Seals training is tough. That’s why when an elite athlete is looking for a fitness training course that will give them the edge over their competition they consider putting their body and mind to the ultimate test. If they can be successful in testing their limits the Seal way – than anything they encounter in their other sports training or during competition will seem easy in comparison.

Recently there was a story in USA Today which reported on a 2 day training the U.S. Olympic sailing team went through with a fitness training course conducted by the U.S. Navy Seals.

“Just when you think you can’t go any further, if your mind tells you that you can, then you just continue to go further,” says Debbie Capozzi, the only member of Tunnicliffe’s reigning world-champion crew to finish the session.

Sports training is just as much a mind game as it is a physical challenge. Your body has to be equipped for the job, your sport, with the right muscles, speed, flexibility and recovery. This comes through consistent training, the right nutrition, and dietary supplements to aid in both performance and recovery.

However, the mental challenge and mental strength of an athlete is just as important as any fitness training course. When you’re tired, cold and sore it’s tempting to let negative self-talk take over your training. Things like:

  • “Quit”
  • “It’s too cold”
  • “It’s too hard”
  • “It’s not worth it”
  • “Maybe I’ll just watch sports from the sidelines rather than actually playing”

Training like a Navy Seal can help you push past that. When you are part of team, when you are part of a larger goal or dream, then giving up on yourself means you’re giving up on your team. You need mental toughness to get the most physical benefit out of your fitness training course.

Hitting the Wall of your Fitness Training Course

Elite athletes do hit that wall. And the successful ones are motivated by the failures and adjust their sports training to build up and strengthen the muscles (physical and mental) needed to succeed, thrive and win.

How do they do it? How do athletes involved in grueling fitness training courses push past the seemingly impossible physical challenges to advance to the next level?

You have to have the ability to re-focus your concentration on what is in front of you and what’s relevant to finishing the competition. During the course of your sports event, whatever that is, you must have the ability to switch your focus on and off as needed. If you’re Tweeting on the sidelines, you’re not focused; if you’re worried about being wet and cold, then you’re not focused on completing or competing in your competition. Sports training for mental toughness requires you to practice focus and learn strategies for getting back on task when your mind wanders.

For the fitness training course put on the by the Seals, that meant concentrating on the next step they had to take while carrying a hundred pound log; that meant concentrating on completing the pushups rather than think about how cold they were. For an athlete in competition, that means concentrating on where the ball is, where you need to be, and what you need to do in that moment to win.
